Intro to backpacking

Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest

May 30 - 31, July 11-12, September 12-13

At the Introduction to Backpacking we spend two days and one night in the backcountry learning and practicing the skills needed to plan and execute your own backpacking trip.

We begin our day with a short meeting at the trailhead to distribute gear for the weekend and introductions. Our instructors will discuss essential items to always carry into the backcountry and how to pack your backpack for optimal comfort. With bags loaded, we begin our hike and leave society behind. As we make our way towards camp, you will learn about backcountry etiquette and hygiene on the trail.

Once at camp, you will learn how to pitch a tent, filter water and make a backcountry meal. After making our homes for the evening, the group has the option to hike further without our heavy backs and explore other trails.

In the morning, after waking to birds chirping and the sun illuminating our tents, we eat breakfast, breakdown our homes and clean up our campsite. As we hike out, women will have the chance to reflect on the last 24 hours and ask any lingering questions.

Over the weekend you will learn:

  • How to pack and wear a backpack

  • How to find trails and navigate the permit system

  • The importance of the 10 Essentials

  • How to pitch a tent

  • How to filter water

  • Safety on the trail

  • How to cook backcountry meals

  • Proper food storage practices

  • How to select a good campsite

  • Leave No Trace principles

  • How to store gear after a trip
